Curtis Dean serves as Executive Director of the Community Broadband Network, or CBAN, and organization he helped co-found in 2018. Dean has been involved in community broadband for over 25 years. He was closely involved in the planning and implementation of a new municipal broadband utility in the Spencer, Iowa in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. In 2011, Curtis joined the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities as Broadband Services Coordinator, providing support for Iowa’s telecommunications utilities. In 2015 he established SmartSource Consulting to provide services to small telecommunications services, including project management, marketing, and strategic planning.
Dean has been invited to speak or lead sessions at numerous conferences and workshops over the years, including The Independent Show (NCTC/ACA Connects), Iowa Communications Alliance, Fiber Broadband Association, NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association, Broadband Communities, Mountain Connect, Utilities Technology Council, and the American Public Power Association.
Dean holds a Bachelor of Arts from Buena Vista University and an Executive Master of Public Administration from the University of South Dakota.
