Paul Spruyt earned an MS degree in Electronics from the University of Gent, Belgium, in 1985.
He joined the Alcatel Research Center in Belgium in 1989 and contributed to the conception and specification of the first commercially available DMT ADSL chipset and system. As General Manager of the Alcatel VDSL Virtual Company he coordinated the development of the first DMT VDSL chipset in 1999 and a successor in 2002 that set the standards for VDSL and VDSL2. From 2002 till 2022 Paul has been responsible for Alcatel’s, Alcatel-Lucent’s and Nokia’s xDSL technology strategy including Vectoring and G.fast. In 2022 Paul broadened his technology strategy activities to xPON.
In 2000, Paul received the Blondel Medal for his contributions to the advance of the telecommunications industry. He was nominated Alcatel Fellow (2006) and Bell Labs Fellow (2010).
